Installation guide

Installing CLIPXEL Studio, step by step.

It's a small app made by an independent developer, without a paid code-signing certificate — that's why Windows and macOS show a warning the first time. Here's exactly what to click.

Windows · SmartScreen

"Windows protected your PC" — it's normal, here's the fix.

Microsoft Defender SmartScreen flags any new application that hasn't paid for a code-signing certificate (hundreds of dollars a year). It doesn't mean the program is unsafe — just that it isn't "known" to Microsoft yet.

Microsoft Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk.
App: Clipxel_Setup.exe
Publisher: Unknown publisher
  1. 1Download the installer and double-click it. The blue window might take a second to show up.
  2. 2Click "More info" — a small line of text below the message.
  3. 3A new button appears: "Run anyway". Click it.
  4. 4Windows will ask for administrator permission (UAC) — accept it, so it installs correctly for every user on the PC.
macOS · Gatekeeper

The Mac warning looks different, but the reason is the same.

macOS blocks apps that haven't gone through Apple's notarization process (a paid developer account). It's solved with a right-click instead of a regular one.

"CLIPXEL" can't be opened because it's from an unidentified developer

macOS cannot verify this app is free of malware.

  1. 1In Finder, right-click (or Ctrl+click) on CLIPXEL Studio — not a double-click.
  2. 2Choose "Open" from the context menu.
  3. 3The same warning will appear, but this time with the "Open" button available — confirm it.
  4. 4You only need to do this the first time; after that it opens normally with a double-click.

Common questions

Is this safe?

Why does this warning show up if the program is legitimate?

Because digitally signing an executable costs money every year (certificates range from $70 to $400 USD depending on the provider), and it takes many downloads to build reputation. It's an entry cost for independent developers, not a sign that anything is wrong with the program.

Does CLIPXEL Studio connect to the internet or upload my videos?

Only to check for a new version (optional, in the background). Your videos never leave your computer.

Can I see the source code before trusting it?

Yes, the project is public on GitHub: github.com/clipxel/clipxel.github.io.
